Stylistic 2300 Pen Driver for Windows 95 and Windows 98, Version 1.08 Installation Instructions and Release Notes 25 May 1999 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------- Installation instructions for installing the Pen Drivers on a system which does not have a previous version of the Pen Driver: 1) Copy all of the files contained in this archive to a floppy disk or to a subdirectory on the hard disk of the Stylistic 2300. 2) Start Windows. The pen system is a Plug and Play device, so when Windows starts up, it should find the pen system and bring up the New Hardware Wizard which will prompt you to install the driver disk for the new hardware that was found. 3) Insert the floppy disk containing the Pen Driver files in the floppy drive, select the "Let Windows search for the best driver" option, and click on the "Next" button. If you have copied the Pen Driver files to a subdirectory on the hard disk, then you will need to specify that subdirectory in the New Hardware Wizard. Windows will open the INF file (FPSIPEN.INF), install the drivers and make the appropriate registry and SYSTEM.INI changes to load the driver. 4) After the driver files have been installed, Windows will prompt you to reboot the machine. Select the reboot option. The pen will be functional after Windows restarts. The pen device will be listed as "ST2300 Pen Tablet" in the Device Manager, under "System Devices". You may view the resources used by the pen device and the driver files and their versions by selecting the Property button in Device Manager. RELEASE NOTES ------------- ENHANCEMENTS TO VERSION 1.08 The following enhancements have been made to this version of the Pen Driver: No Pen Loss In previous versions of the Pen Driver, the pen would infrequently stop working. This version has enhancements that should minimize this behavior. In addition, un-checking the "Enable Recognition and Inking" checkbox in the PenX Handwriter Settings Control Panel applet will not cause the pen to stop functioning. Recognition Timeout In previous versions of the Pen Driver, the recognition timeout set in the Windows Control Panel had no effect. Handwriting recognition always occurred as soon as the pen was pulled out of proximity from the pen tablet. In this version of the Pen Driver, the recognition timeout can be set by opening the Pen Services Handwriter Settings, selecting the Personal tab and moving the "Recognize Handwriting after a..." slider at the bottom of the window. Improved Recognition Accuracy The accuracy of handwriting recognition should be better with this version of the Pen Driver. Expanded VGA Supported This version of the Pen Driver supports Expanded VGA. When the "Expand VGA Screen" BIOS configuration option is set to Enabled, the cursor should be aligned with the pen when the Windows display size is configured as 640x480. KNOWN DEFICIENCIES The following are known limitations of this version of the Pen Driver: 1024x768 Display Mode Calibration In the 1024x768 display mode with panning, the cursor may not track perfectly with the pen if the pen is tapped on the left edge of the tablet. To fix this, pan the screen by tapping the pen on the bottom right edge of the tablet. In addition, the pen calibration utility cannot run in 1024x768 display mode. To calibrate the pen in 1024x768 mode, switch to the 800x600 display mode, run the calibration utility to calibrate the pen and then switch back to 1024x768 mode. Safe Mode Calibration In Safe Mode, the cursor may not track perfectly with the pen and it is not possible to run the calibration utility in Safe Mode. To calibrate the pen in Safe Mode, start Windows in Normal Mode, switch to the 640x480 display mode, and calibrate the pen. Multiple Display Mode Changes Changing the display mode multiple times without restarting Windows may cause problems, including misalignment of the cursor and pen, disappearing ink, or misrecognized characters. Rebooting the system clears these problems.
