Installing Windows XP (Home & Professional) Windows XP may come factory installed on your HP Notebook. The following procedure installs a retail version of Windows XP and configures the appropriate device drivers. This README file describes how to: * Prepare for software installation. * Install a retail version of retail Windows XP. _______________________________ IMPORTANT: The Chipset support must be installed first before any other devices * Install INTEL 845 Chipset support * Install Video support for Windows XP. * Install Audio support for Windows XP. * Install Pointing Device support for Windows XP. * Install Modem support for Windows XP. * Update PCCARD support for Windows XP. * Update Wireless LAN support for Windows XP. (Some notebooks) * Update Bluetooth support for Windows XP. (Some notebooks) * Update Secure Digital Storage support for Windows XP. * Install USB-to-Serial dongle support for Windows XP. * Install OneTouch Button utility. * Install HP Notebook Utilities. * Install HP Desktop Zoom. * Install HP Presentation Ready. * Install E-Diag Utility Requirements * HP Notebook with internal CD-ROM/DVD drive. * Windows XP CD. * HP Notebook drivers for Windows XP. Location: On the Product Recovery CD in \HP\DRIVERS and \HP\PROGRAMS or on the web at hp.com In the following directions we will be referring to directories that contain the drivers we will need. The directories we will use are listed below. * Chipset directory = \HP\DRIVERS\INTEL845 * Video directory = \HP\DRIVERS\VIDEO * Audio directory = \HP\DRIVERS\AUDIO * Touchpad directory = \HP\DRIVERS\TOUCHPAD * Modem directory = \HP\DRIVERS\MODEM * Cardbus inf directory = \HP\DRIVERS\CARDBUS * Cardbus update directory = \HP\DRIVERS\ENE_ATA * Wireless LAN directory = \HP\DRIVERS\WIRELESS\802_11 * Bluetooth directory = \HP\DRIVERS\wireless\blutooth * Secure Digital Storage directory = \HP\DRIVERS\SEC_DGTL * USB-to-Serial dongle directory = \HP\DRIVERS\USB2SER * OneTouch Button diretory = \HP\DRIVERS\ONETOUCH * HP Utilities directory = \HP\DRIVERS\HPNBUTIL * HP Desktop Zoom directory = \HP\PROGRAMS\DESKZOOM * HP Presentation Ready directory = \HP\PROGRAMS\PRESRDY * HP E-Diags directory = \HP\PROGRAMS\E-DIAGS All other drivers are included in the distribution of Windows XP for the HP notebook _______________________ IMPORTANT: Before installing Windows XP please install the latest BIOS for your HP Notebook. To check your BIOS version do the following: 1. Start the HP Notebook. 2. Press F2 to Enter setup when prompted. 3. Check the BIOS Version in the upper left corner. You can download the latest HP Notebook BIOS from hp.com _______________________ To Prepare for Software Installation It is recommended you repartition your hard disk before installing Windows XP. Follow the instructions below to repartition your hard disk. This will add hard disk based diagnostics to make support easier. 1. Connect the AC adapter to the Notebook. 2. Insert the CD-ROM/DVD Drive in the Notebook. 3. Insert the bootable Recovery CD into the CD-ROM/DVD drive. 4. Reboot, press ESC when you see the HP Notebook logo. 5. Select the "CD-ROM/DVD Drive" as the boot device. 6. Click 2 Continue. 7. Click 2 Advanced. 8. Select your desired Hibernate Partition Size. (0M is the HP Preferred Size for XP) 9. Check "Do not load operating system". 10. Select "Hibernate partition only". 11. Click 1 Continue. 12. Click Ok. _______________________ Installing Windows XP non-Hewlett Packard OEM These directions provide installation steps for installing a non-Hewlett Packard provided version of Windows XP on Omnibook notebook computers. 1. Start with the computer off. To turn off the computer hold the power button that is located above the upper left side of the keyboard. You must hold this button for 5 seconds or until the system switches off. 2. Press the power button and release it. The computer should begin to show signs of booting like screen turning on and lights on the front of the system. 3. When the HP Invent logo appears on the screen press the ESC (escape) key once. The HP Invent logo should disappear showing the details of the system POST (Power On Self Test). This will activate the boot menu that will allow you to boot from CD. 4. Place the XP installation CD in the drive and wait a moment for your optical drive to determine what type of CD you have inserted. When the light on the optical drive has been on for a few seconds you may use the arrow keys to select "CD-ROM/DVD Drive" and press ENTER. 5. As the CD begins to boot you may see a message that says, "PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD" this message only lasts a few seconds. Press ENTER to boot from CD. If you miss the message the system will boot from hard drive, to boot from CD return to step 1 and turn off the notebook. It does not matter if you interrupt the system from booting as we will be formatting the hard drive to install XP. You will only see this message if the XP CD detects that you have a bootable partition on your hard drive. 6. Welcome to XP setup. Press ENTER 7. End User License Agreement (EULA) screen. Press F8 to accept the EULA and continue installation. 9. If you have a prior version of XP or Windows 2000 installed on your system you may see a dialogue asking to Repair or install? Press ESC to install a new version of the operating system. 10. Choose installation partition. The first partition is listed as FAT and is quite small, this is your diagnostic partition (If you created one in earlier steps). The second listing will either be listed as UNPARTITIONED SPACE or will be listed as one or more partitions depending on if you erased your hard drive or have chosen to install over another operating system. Using the arrow keys highlight the UNPARTITIONED SPACE or the largest partition and press ENTER to use all available space, otherwise you can press C to create a partition that is smaller than the available space if you wish to have a separate data partition. 11. Choose format for your installation partition. Select FORMAT USING NTFS (QUICK) or FORMAT USING FAT (QUICK) depending on needs. Hewlett Packard does suggest that you select NTFS at this point if you intend to convert to NTFS at a later time, this will make a higher performance file system and appropriate security settings. Setup will examine the hard disks and begin to copy files after the format is complete. At the end of file copy the system will restart automatically. 12. Upon restart, the graphical (GUI) portion of the install will begin. There is still about 10-15 minutes available to you before you will be asked for input; the total process takes about 40 minutes from this point. 13. Select your regional information and your language settings. For US installations you will not need to make any changes. Press NEXT. 14. Enter you name and organization information and press NEXT. 15. Enter your product license key and press NEXT. 16. Provide a computer name and a password for the administrator account. You may accept the default computer name and/or leave the administrator password blank. Press NEXT. 17. You will be asked to provide TAPI (telephone settings) if your system has a modem that XP already has drivers for. Provide your area code and any special dialing needs like a 9 to access an outside line. Press NEXT. 18. Define your time zone to XP and set the appropriate date and time. Failure to define the proper time zone may cause odd problems later with programs like MS Outlook that rely upon this setting. 19. Network settings, allow the default of TYPICAL SETTINGS unless you have some special needs. Press NEXT. 20. (WinXP Professional only) Domain and workgroup settings, input any needed settings for your LAN. Keep in mind that you will need to have rights to add this PC to a domain if you try to. Press NEXT. 21. After some time finalizing settings the system will restart again. After the system restarts XP will adjust the screen resolution because the default resolution of 640x480 is not compatible with the XP registration and help facilities. There is a series of on screen prompting that sets the screen resolution. It will adjust the screen resolution to 1024x768x32bit color. Depending on the system you have this may not be the proper resolution for the LCD screen. We will adjust this later when installing the video drivers. 22. XP welcome screen, Press NEXT in lower right corner. 23. XP will check for internet connection for the registration process. You may press SKIP in the lower left corner to skip the registration or if you don't have internet connection. If you do choose to skip you may select to REGISTER LATER and press NEXT. 24. XP User definition, you must enter at least one user that will be using this computer. These are local accounts that have local administrator levels of access automatically. 25. Press FINISH to enter the XP desktop. ____________________ Chipset Installation (INTEL) IMPORTANT: Chipset must be installed first before any other driver. 1. Run Setup.exe from the INTEL845 directory. 2. Select NEXT on the Welcome screen to proceed to the License screen. Select YES, followed by NEXT on the Readme screen. 3. At the end of the installation select FINISH and manually reboot the computer ___________________ Video Installation (ATI). Windows XP does not contain the necessary drivers for the video hardware that is in your HP notebook. You must install the specific video driver. 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the Video driver directory 2. Select NEXT on the following screen to get to the License Agreement screen. Select YES to continue with the installation. 3. Click Finish to restart the computer. ____________________ Audio Installation (Avance). While Windows XP does contain the necessary drivers for the Audio hardware that is in your HP notebook, the capabilities will be limited unless the enhanced audio driver is installed. 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the AUDIO driver directory. 2. Select NEXT on the following screen to complete the installation. 3. Press FINISH to exit the Audio driver installation and reboot the computer. ____________________ Touchpad Installation (Synaptics). While Windows XP does contain the necessary drivers for the touchpad hardware that is in your HP notebook, the capabilities will be limited unless the enhanced touchpad driver is installed. 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the Touchpad driver directory. 2. Choose desired language and press OK. 3. Select NEXT on the next 3 screens to complete the installation. 4. At the end you will be asked to reboot the PC. Choose NO and press FINISH to exit the touchpad driver installation. ____________________ Modem Installation (ESS). While Windows XP does contain the necessary drivers for the modem that is in your HP notebook, the capabilities will be limited unless the enhanced modem driver is installed. 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the Modem driver directory. 2. Select NEXT on the Welcome Screen. 3. Choose "Install/Upgrade Drivers" and press NEXT. 3. Press FINISH to exit the Modem driver installation. ____________________ Bluetooth Installation (3COM). If Bluetooth hardware is included in your HP notebook, you must install the Bluetooth drivers and software. Windows XP does not contain the necessary drivers for the Bluetooth Wireless hardware that may be in your HP notebook. Bluetooth drivers and software installation will take up to 10 minutes. 1. Open the start menu by clicking the START button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Right click MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. This will open the computer management console. 2. In the left pane of the management console select DEVICE MANAGER. 3. In the right pane you should a device listed as ?!USB Device under ?OTHER DEVICES. 4. Right click on USB Device and select UPDATE DRIVER. 5. Leave on default settings and press NEXT. This will automatically locate the driver and install it. Five devices will appear in the right pane:- ?3COM Bluetooth DUN Client ?3COM Bluetooth FAX Client ?3COM Bluetooth LAN Client ?3COM Bluetooth Serial Host Client ?3COM Bluetooth Serial Client 6. Repeat this process for each device, right click on the device and select UPDATE DRIVER. Leave on default settings and press NEXT. 7. After all five devices are installed, you must restart your notebook before installing the Bluetooth software. After restarting make sure the bluetooth is set to ON. 8. Run BT3COEM.EXE from the wireless Bluetooth software directory (BTSW) and follow the on-screen directions. Note that Bluetooth modem configuration can take up to 5 minutes. ____________________ Cardbus Installation (ENE). While Windows XP does contain the necessary drivers for the cardbus hardware that is in your HP notebook, the capabilities will be limited unless the enhanced cardbus driver is installed. 1. Open the start menu by clicking the START button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Right click MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. This will open the computer management console. 2. In the left pane of the management console select DEVICE MANAGER. 3. In the right pane, click on the '+' symbol of PCMCIA adapters to open the device list of PCMCIA adapters installed. 4. Right click on GENERIC CARDBUS CONTROLLER and select UPDATE DRIVER. 5. Choose the "Install from list or specific location (Advanced)" option and press NEXT. 6. Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations:" option. 7. Check the "Include this location in the search:" option and Browse to the CARDBUS directory. Press NEXT. 8. Press FINISH to exit the installation and close the window of the Computer Management screen. 9. Double-click on ENECBPTH.EXE in the ENE_ATA directory to install the cardbus update. 10. Click OK and manually reboot the computer. ____________________ Wireless LAN installation (LAN Express) Windows XP does not contain the necessary drivers for the wireless LAN hardware that may be in your HP notebook. Some HP notebooks are not equipped with wireless LAN. 1. Open the start menu by clicking the START button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Right click MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. This will open the computer management console. 2. In the left pane of the management console select DEVICE MANAGER. 3. In the right pane you should see a device listed as ?!NETWORK CONTROLLER under ?OTHER DEVICES. 4. Right click on NETWORK CONTROLLER and select UPDATE DRIVER. 5. Choose the "Install from list or specific location (Advanced)" option and press NEXT. 6. Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations:" option. 7. Check the "Include this location in the search:" option and Browse to the WIRELESS\802_11\WINXP directory. Press NEXT. 8. Press FINISH to exit the installation and close the window of the Computer Management screen. ____________________ Secure Digital Storage (SDS) Installation (WinBond) Windows XP does not contain the necessary drivers for the SDS hardware that may be in your HP notebook. Some HP notebooks are not equipped with SDS. 1. Open the start menu by clicking the START button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Right click MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. This will open the computer management console. 2. In the left pane of the management console select DEVICE MANAGER. 3. In the right pane you should see a device listed as ?!Unknown device under ?OTHER DEVICES. 4. Right click on UNKNOWN DEVICES and select UPDATE DRIVER. 5. Choose the "Install from list or specific location (Advanced)" option and press NEXT. 6. Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations:" option. 7. Check the "Include this location in the search:" option and Browse to the SEC_DGTL directory. Press NEXT. 8. Press FINISH to exit the installation and close the window of the Computer Management screen. ____________________ USB-to-Serial dongle support installation There is no serial port on this product, but a USB-to-Serial dongle is available. If you've installed a retail version of Windows XP and want to use the USB-to-Serial dongle, you will need to install this driver . 1. To start the installation, plug the USB-to-Serial dongle into one of the USB ports on the HP Notebook 2. A USB <-> Serial device will be detected in the "Found New Hardware Wizard". 3. Choose the "Install from list or specific location (Advanced)" option and press NEXT. 4. Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations:" option. 5. Check the "Include this location in the search:" option and Browse to the USB2SER directory. Press NEXT. 6. Press FINISH to exit the installation 7. A Found New Hardware Wizard window will appear, a USB Serial port has been detected. 8. Choose the "Install from list or specific location (Advanced)" option and press NEXT. 9. Select the "Search for the best driver in these locations:" option. 10. Check the "Include this location in the search:" option and Browse to the USB2SER directory. Press NEXT. 11. Press FINISH to exit the installation and close the window of the Computer Management screen. 12. You may have to reboot before the system will detect and install the driver for your specific serial device. ______________________ One-Touch Button Support Installation Windows XP does not contain the necessary drivers for One-Touch Button Support. To utilize the One-Touch Buttons you will need to install this utility. 1. Run Setup.exe from the OneTouch directory. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install. 3. Click Yes to reboot the system after installation. ____________________ HP Notebook Utilities This is a collection of several Utilities, designed to ease the use of your Notebook. Depending on the hardware in the Notebook, different utilities may be installed. Utilities that may be installed include HP Display Settings, HP TV Now, HP Battery Optimizer and HP Quick Lock. HP Display Settings allows you to switch active displays and modify LCD brightness. HP TV Now makes it easier to use a TV as an external display device. HP Battery Optimizer assists in battery calibration. HP Quick Lock configures one of the One-Touch buttons to lock the computer (instead of having to do CTRL+ALT+DEL and choose Lock Computer). One-Touch Button support must have been installed prior to installing the HP Notebook Utilities for the Quick-Lock function to work. To install HP Notebook Utilities (you must have administrator rights): 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the HP Notebook Utilities directory. 2. Follow the on screen directions to complete the installation. ____________________ HP Desktop Zoom installation (HP). HP Desktop Zoom allows you to adjust the sizes of the fonts and icons of the display 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the driver directory. 2. Select Next and accept the License Agreement by selecting YES. 3. Press NEXT twice the following screen directions to complete the installation. ____________________ HP Presentation Ready installation (HP). HP Presentation Ready simplifies the process of starting a presentation by automatically switching to the external display device and changing video resolution. 1. Run SETUP.EXE from the driver directory. 2. Select Next and accept the License Agreement by selecting YES. 3. Press NEXT on the following screen to complete the installation. ________________________ E-Diag Installation This utility allows you to connect to hp.com and download diagnostics and BIOS updates. To use this utility you must have created a Hibernation partition as described in the "Prepare for Software installation" section. 1. Run EDTWIN.exe from the E-Diags directory 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and click OK to reboot the computer.
