Using the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System This product has been tested with Microsoft XP version RTM2600 and is functioning correctly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Using the Chat Feature The Chat feature allows you to talk to one other computer that uses Bluetooth Connection Manager by 3Com version 1.1 or later. To initiate a Chat, follow these steps: 1. Select a device from the list of discovered devices. 2. Either right-click the Chat icon or click Chat from the toolbar or menu. After any required authentication and authorization, the chat connection is made. 3. In the Chat window, type your message in the lower area and press Enter or click Send. Read the entire conversation in the upper window. The Chat window appears on each end of the Chat connection. While the connection is initiating, the Chat window displays the status. If an attempt fails, it is indicated in the Chat window and the Send button is inactive (grayed out). When using the Chat feature, a conversation takes place between two users. To converse with other users, you must open a new Chat window for each user. You can have multiple Chat windows open simultaneously. The Chat option is available only when the selected device is a computer-class device. Printers and LAN access points, which are not computer-class devices, do not support chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Using Point-to-Multipoint Functionality Point-to-multipoint functionality lets you initiate connections to multiple devices that use Bluetooth technology. If a device initiates the connection, it can connect to multiple devices, but the device that accepts the connection can connect only to that one. The accepting device cannot make additional connections, device or service discoveries, or inquiries. If you are connecting to a LAN access point, the access point can support multiple connections but you may be able to connect only to the access point. Only one serial connection (DUN, fax, or LAN that is tied to a COM port) and one file send connection can exist at a time. For example, if you have initiated a send file operation, a Chat session, and a Dial-up Bluetooth connection, they can exist concurrently, but two send file operations or two Dial-up connections cannot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Using LAN Access LAN access point connections work the same way DUN or fax connections work. Go to your Dial-up Networking folder, double-click "3Com Bluetooth LAN Access Client", and fill in your user name and password when prompted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Using Bluetooth Connection Manager with Multiple Modems/LAN Cards Installed If you have more than one modem and LAN card installed on your system when you install Bluetooth Connection Manager, the install may hang. This is because your computer does not have enough resources to install Bluetooth Connection Manager. Uninstall one or more modem or LAN cards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Time for Hardware Installation Resource allocations may cause the Bluetooth hardware install to appear to proceed slowly. You must wait until the hardware finishes installing before starting the software installation (Installation step 2). If the software installation is started before the hardware installation has completed, both installations will fail. If you try to install the software too soon and receive the message that the hardware install has not yet completed, when the hardware install is complete, the message disappears and the software install starts automatically. If you receive an error message that the installation process has failed, remove the Bluetooth device, restart your machine, and begin the hardware installation process again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Progress Bar Stops During File Send If you are sending a file but the progress bar indicates that no action is taking place, click cancel and restart the file transfer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Install Only One Device at a Time Bluetooth Connection Manager is designed to support only one local Bluetooth device at a time. If more than one device has been installed (for example, a PC Card and a USB device), Connection Manager will try to use the first one it finds and Bluetooth port mappings may be incorrect. Use the Device Manager to uninstall one of the Bluetooth devices (see item 5 below). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. Uninstalling Software and Hardware Both the software and the hardware are uninstalled when the software uninstall is run. You can uninstall just the hardware by running Uninstal\BTRemove.exe from the Bluetooth CD. To uninstall the hardware manually, see chapter 2 of the online user guide, section "Uninstalling your Bluetooth PC Card and Virtual COM Ports". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. Using Bluetooth-Enabled Phones 3Com Bluetooth devices are compatible only with phones using Bluetooth Specification version 1.1 or later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Changes to Online User Guide Chapter 2, "Bluetooth Installation CD": XTNDConnect PC mobile synchronization and management software and 3Com Mobile Connection Manager software are not included on the CD. Chapter 2, "Installing the PC Card and Virtual COM Ports", step 1 should read: "With the computer on and Windows 98 SE, Me, or 2000 running, insert the Bluetooth Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. The auto-start feature starts the installation. If auto-start is disabled on your computer, click Start>Run and type d:\setup.exe (where d: is your CD-ROM drive). If auto-start is enabled and nothing happens within five seconds, restart your computer and log in to Windows. The installation process begins and the 3Com Wireless Installer menu appears." Chapter 2, "Installing the PC Card and Virtual COM Ports", step 8: XTNDConnect PC mobile synchronization and management software and 3Com Mobile Connection Manager software are not available when installing additional software. Chapter 2, "Installing Your External Bluetooth USB Device and Virtual COM Ports", step 1 should read: "With the computer on and Windows 98 SE, Me, or 2000 running, insert the Bluetooth Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. The auto-start feature starts the installation. If auto-start is disabled on your computer, click Start>Run and type d:\setup.exe (where d: is your CD-ROM drive). If auto-start is enabled and nothing happens within five seconds, restart your computer and log in to Windows. The installation process begins and the 3Com Wireless Installer menu appears." Chapter 2, "Installing Your External Bluetooth USB Device and Virtual COM Ports", step 3: Remove " After inserting the PC Card, if auto-start is enabled and nothing happens within five seconds, restart your computer and log in to Windows. The installation process begins when the computer restarts." Chapter 2, "Confirming Device Installation," step 6: PC Card: Replace "Multi-port serial adapters" with "3Com Bluetooth". USB device: Replace "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" with "3Com Bluetooth". Chapter 2, "Uninstalling Your Bluetooth PC Card and Virtual COM Ports", step 6: PC Card: Replace "Multi-port serial adapters" with "3Com Bluetooth". USB device: Replace "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" with "3Com Bluetooth". Both devices: The Bluetooth software uninstall also uninstalls the hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 12. Communication Among Bluetooth Devices Because Bluetooth is a new technology, new Bluetooth devices are continually being released and compatibility testing continues; thus, communication with other Bluetooth devices cannot be guaranteed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 13. System Will Not Go Into Suspend Mode Your system may not go into suspend mode if a connection or inquiry is active. To go into suspend mode, terminate any active Bluetooth connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 14. Using Direct Cable Connect With Both a Host and a Client Port Configured When running Direct Cable Connect (DCC) in Windows 2000 with both a host and a client port defined, when your computer resumes from suspend mode, it may not be able to open the host port. To resolve this, deselect the client port under the Host connection properties after the resume. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 15. Error When Printing Directly to a Printer When using Bluetooth wireless technology, always print through a print spooler; do not print directly to a printer. Printing through a print spooler is the default setting. To make sure that you are printing through a spooler, follow these steps: 1. Select Printers from either My Computer or Start>Settings. 2. Right-click the printer you are using. 3. Select Properties. 4. Select the Details tab. 5. Click Spool Settings... and make sure that "Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster" is selected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 16. Error Message Received When Printing a Document When you are printing a file, if you receive the message "There was an error found when printing the document to COMx. Do you want to retry or cancel?," do not respond to the message. The file will print correctly. If the message does not clear after a couple of minutes, cancel and verify printer status, then try printing the file again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 17. Activating Bluetooth Profiles that Use a COM Port When activating a Bluetooth profile, use Tools>COM ports in Bluetooth Connection Manager to see which drivers or applications are assigned to which COM ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 18. Setting Up a Client COM Port Typically, only one application at a time can use a COM port. When you assign a COM port as a client (such as assigning a printer to a specific COM port), that COM port is tied up and is not available for any other application on the system to use. When assigning another application to a COM port that is assigned, temporarily reassign the COM port in the original application. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 19. Using an Application on a Host COM Port In Windows 2000, when using an application such as Hyperterminal for a host COM port, the application locks the COM port open. To release the COM port, close the application that is using it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20. Error When Using Direct Cable Connect When Windows Restarts When Windows 2000 restarts, Bluetooth Connection Manager displays the "Select Remote Device" window when using Direct Cable Connect. Select Cancel when this window appears. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 21. Using Direct Cable Connect On a Windows 98 SE System We recommend that you do not use Direct Cable Connect with Windows 98 SE using Bluetooth wireless technology. Certain functions using Windows 98 SE over wireless links with Direct Cable Connect can be unreliable, but can often be fixed by restarting the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 22. Upgrading the Operating System Before upgrading the operating system, remove the Bluetooth adapter and uninstall Bluetooth Connection Manager: 1. Disconnect the Bluetooth adapter. 2. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs. 3. Select Bluetooth Connection Manager. 4. Click Add/Remove. 5. Choose the Remove option and click Next. 6. Follow the uninstall prompts. After you have installed the new operating system, insert the Installation CD, reconnect or reinsert the Bluetooth adapter, and then reinstall Bluetooth Connection Manager.
