PURPOSE. -------- These files will allow Windows95 Device Manager to properly recognize the INTEL 82371AB [PIIX4], 82437TX, 82443LX and 82443BX components of the system board. Without these files, optimum system performance may not be obtained. This readme file is set up in 3 sections: Section I. = Clean Installation. Section II. = Installation on a pre-existing installation. Section III. = Installation of USB support. !!NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you print these instructions before attempting to use the UPDATE files... SECTION I. ---------- Instructions for installing the update files for Windows95 OSR2.x during a clean installation (This assumes the hard drive has been formatted). 1. Insert the System Boot Diskette into the A: drive and boot your system (or reboot it if it is already on). 2. Insert your Windows95 CD into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Select the "EXIT" option from the menu after your system is booted. You should now be at an A:\ prompt. 4. Make an installation directory on the hard drive. (ie. from the A:\ prompt, type: "MD C:\WININST"). 5. Copy the contents of the WIN95 directory on the WINDOWS95 CD to this directory. (ie. from the A:\ prompt, type: "COPY D:\WIN95\*.* C:\WININST") 6. Remove the System Boot Diskette, and insert the "Integrated Controller UATA files for Windows95" diskette. 7. Copy the MACHINE.INF and MSHDC.INF from the "Integrated Controller UATA files for Windows95" diskette to the same directory. (ie. from the A:\ prompt, type: "COPY M*.INF C:\WININST"). 8. Change to the C:\WININST directory and Run "SETUP". (ie. from the A:\ prompt, type: "C:" and then from the C:\ prompt, type: "CD\WININST". From the C:\WININST prompt, type: "SETUP"). SECTION II. ------------ Instructions for installing the update for Windows95 OSR2.x on a pre-existing installation (This assumes that Windows95 has been installed from the Windows95 CD without using the update files). It is recommended you read through this entire procedure, especially the "!!NOTE:" sections following step #10 below before installing the update files, so you will know what to expect during the hardware re-detection phase after your system has restarted. 1. Insert the "Integrated Controller UATA files for Windows95" diskette into the A: drive. 2. From within Windows95, Run the UPDATE.BAT file on the A: drive by clicking on the RUN option from the START menu, and typing: "A:\UPDATE" and clicking on "OK" (this will copy the necessary files to your hard drive). NOTE: This assumes the default directory for Windows95, is called "WINDOWS". If your Windows95 directory is not called Windows, then edit the UPDATE.BAT file to reflect the proper path. If you have not installed the USB drivers and wish to do so, please refer to the instructions for installing USB Support in Section III and then return to step #3 below. 3. Right-Click on the "My Computer" icon, and select "Properties". 4. Click on the "Device Manager" tab. 5. Click on "View Devices By Connection". 6. Double-Click on the "Plug and Play BIOS" 7. Click on "PCI Bus" 8. Click on the "REMOVE" button. 9. Click on the "OK" button. 10. Your system should automatically shut down, and re-start on it's own. At this time, Windows95 will re-detect all PCI devices, and reinstall those devices which are on the PCI Bus, to include proper recognition of the Intel 82371AB [PIIX4] and 82437TX components on the system board. !! TIP: To save time during the hardware detection process, select "NO" when you are asked to restart the system. Do this until all devices are done being detected and you are at the Windows Desktop. Once you are at the Windows Desktop, then perform a shutdown/restart by clicking on the START button, and selecting "Shut Down". Also during the recognition process you will be given the opportunity re-install any special drivers like video drivers. !!NOTE: If your system contains an Ensoniq PCI Audio solution, you will be asked for the drivers during the hardware detection phase. Select "OK" and when asked for the location of the EAPCI.VXD driver, select "CANCEL". You will be told that the drivers are not installed. This is ok, as the Ensoniq PCI audio solution, has a special installation procedure it uses that can not be done, until you have restarted the system. To restore sound to Windows95, re-start the system, and re-run the Ensoniq PCI Audio installation according to the instructions in the Ensoniq Audio PCI Wavetable Sound Card manual. !!NOTE: You will also be told during the process of hardware detection, that the USB driver is not present. Unless you have previously installed the USB support, click on "FINISH" to bypass looking for the drivers. If you have previously installed USB support, then type: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM", and it will locate the drivers from there. SECTION III. ----------- Instructions for Installing the USB Support (Read these instructions in their entirety before attempting to install USB support on your system). !!NOTE: It is strongly recommended that unless you have USB devices to plug into the USB ports on the back of your system, that you NOT install USB support. Once USB support has been installed, the USB Supplement updates the version of the installation. This will cause the AUTORUN function of the Windows95 CD to disable the ADD/REMOVE programs feature of the menu since it is detecting a newer version of Windows95 than what the CD has on it. To re-enable this feature, the USB Supplement must be removed via the Control Panel ADD/REMOVE Program icon. 1. Install the USB Supplement (run USBSUPP.EXE from the DRIVERS\USB subdirectory on your WINDOWS95 CD). a. Insert the Windows95 CD into the CD-ROM drive. b. From within Windows95 click on the RUN option from the START menu, and type: "D:\DRIVERS\USB\USBSUPP.EXE" and click "OK". This assumes D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. c. Click "FINISH" to restart your system. !!NOTE: The USB Support has been installed on your system, but the remainder of these steps need to be followed to properly activate it. 2. Insert the "Integrated Controller UATA Files for Windows95" diskette, and click on the RUN from the START menu. Type: "A:\USBUPD" (this will copy an updated .INF to your hard drive, but only if the USBSUPP.EXE has been run NOTE: The updated file copied to your system in this step is not required for proper operation of the USB ports on PIIX4 boards, but only offers proper identification of the 82371AB USB Controller rather than identifying them as a "STANDARD UNIVERSAL PCI to USB HOST CONTROLLER"). If for any reason you fail to do step #2 above, the USB Controller will still operate correctly, but you will be asked for the locations of a file during the re-detection phase after Step #11 below. (When it asks for the "UHCD.SYS" driver, type: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" and click the "OK" button). 3. Right-Click on the "My Computer" icon, and select "Properties". 4. Click on the "Device Manager" tab. 5. Double-Click on the yellow "? Other Devices" 6. Click on "PCI Universal Serial Bus" 7. Click on the "REMOVE" button. 8. Click on the "OK" button. 9. Click the "CLOSE" Button 10. Restart your system by selecting SHUTDOWN from the START menu NOTE: If Step #2 above was not done previously, and you now wish to update the USB.INF file, follow Step #2-#10 making the following changes in the steps: In Step #5, substitute "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLER" for the "? Other Devices" In Step #6, substitute "STANDARD UNIVERSAL PCI to USB HOST CONTROLLER" for " PCI Universal Serial Bus" Applicable Part Numbers: MBDPCI034AAWW, 4000068, 4000286, 4000298, 4000304, 4000305, 4000503, 2501217, 2504684, 2501218, 2501219, 2501222, 2501223, 2501495, 4000068, 4000286, 4000298, 4000304, 4000305, 4000508, MBDSAC085AAWW, MBDSAC086AAWW, MBDSAC087AAWW, MBDSAC088AAWW, MBDSAC089AAWW, MBDPCI034AAWW, MBDSAC093AEWW, MBDSAC094AEWW, MBDSAC095AEWW, MBDSAC108AEWW, MBDSAC109AEWW, MBDSAC110AEWW, MBDSAC115AAWW, MBDSAC117AEWW, MBDSAC118ADWW, MBDSAC123AAWW, MBDSAC123ABWW, MBDSAC123ACWW, mbdsac123adww, MBDSAC123AEWW, MBDSAC124AEWW, MBDSAC126AAWW, MBDSAC127AAWW, MBDSAC128AAWW, MBDSAC129AAWW, MBDSAC129ABWW, MBDSAC130AAWW, MBDSAC130ABWW
