This readme file describes the procedure to install the Windows NT4.0 drivers for hp StorageWorks LTO Ultrium Tape drives. SP19821 1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive. The SoftPaq file that is downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a file name based on the SoftPaq Number above. 2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. Press the Space Bar to confirm the unpacking of files into the download directory. 3. After the files have been unpacked, you may delete the self-extracting SoftPaq file downloaded in step 1. The hp StorageWorks Ultrium tape devices are designed for use in high performance server environments. In order to realize the full performance of this tape drive it is necessary to use a third party backup application and not the ntbackup ‘applet’ supplied with the Windows NT operating system. The Ultrium tape drives have a far higher performance than the ntbackup utility, which can only supply data at 2 MB/s (without data compression). This is insufficient to maintain the HP StorageWorks Ultrium drive in ‘streaming’ mode and will result in frequent stopping and repositioning of the tape. The driver provided with this readme is for the Windows NT operating system, but the native NTbackup utility is not the preferred solution due to the performance limitations stated above. INSTALLATION How to install on the Windows NT 4.0 platform: Note1: In all cases first remove any older version of the Ultrium driver, before starting the installation of the HP StorageWorks Ultrium driver. You can remove drivers by choosing the 'remove' option instead of the 'add' option on the drivers tab. Note2: Before starting the driver installation, verify that your tape drive is properly connected. Windows NT 4.0 only allows you to install tape device drivers sequentially. If you have other tape devices installed without drivers, install those drivers before attempting the following procedure, or click Cancel to bypass each tape device. 1. Log on to Windows NT as Administrator, supplying the necessary password. 2. Click the Start button and then select Settings >> Control Panel to open the Windows Control Panel. 3. Double-click the Tape Devices icon. 4. The Tape Devices dialog box is displayed and indicates that the driver for the new tape drive is not loaded. If the system does not automatically scan for new devices, select Detect. This scanning process creates a list of device drivers available for installation. 5. In the Install Driver dialog box, click Have Disk. The Install From Disk dialog box is displayed. 6. In the Copy manufacturer's files from field, type the driver path to the extracted driver .inf and .sys files. 7. In the New SCSI Tape Device Found dialog box, click OK. In the Tape Devices dialog box, click OK. This step completes the driver installation. 8. You normally need to re-boot the system, unless the tape driveris the first tape driver installed on your system. In this case, the Tape Devices dialog box will display the "driver loaded" message. Close this window. You should be able to use your new tape drive.
