General Requirements ------------------------- To install the Compaq WL300 Software Access Point, you must have the following: - SP15583 downloaded and expanded to a folder on your PC's hard disk; - a computer running the Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 4 or higher), or Windows 2000 operating system; - a WL100 PC Card and an available PCMCIA card slot on your portable computer; or a WL200 PCI card and an available PCI- slot on your desktop PC (please see section 1.2 and 1.3 below for firmware requirements); - if you are running NT 4.0, you must have CardWare or a similar program installed to use the WL100 PC Card; - an installed wired LAN adapter (typically an Ethernet card) if you plan to use the WL300 SAP to connect a wireless LAN to a wired LAN; - the WL300 CD-ROM and paper sleeve with attached license key label included in the original package you purchased. ************************************************************* NOTE: Without a valid license key, you will not be able to install the software. ************************************************************* Please read sections 1.2. - 1.3. below for firmware and driver requirements. 1.2. Firmware Requirements -------------------------- To take full advantage of the new features and improvements of the WL300 Software Access Point you must have a WL100 PC card or a WL200 PCI card with firmware version 0.8.0. If you have not yet installed a WL100 PC Card, a WL200 PCI card or a WL300 Software Access Point on your computer, please read sections 1.3. and 1.4. below, then follow the steps in section 2 to install the hardware, drivers and software. You can then update the firmware as described in section 2.4. if necessary. If you already have a WL100 or WL200 adapter installed on your system, you can update the firmware by following these steps: 1. Start your computer and allow Windows to boot. Ensure that the Configuration Utility is closed. 2. Select START->RUN and BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583. 3. Select the file FWUPDATE.exe, click on OPEN, then click on OK. 4. The utility detects the WL card and the current firmware version. 5. - If the current firmware is identified as 0.8.0, you need not update the adapter. Continue with step 6 below. - If the current firmware is identified as 0.6.2 or lower, click on UPDATE and follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware of your WL adapter. 6. Close the FWUPDATE utility by clicking on the x button in the upper right hand corner. Please read section 1.3. below, then continue with section 3. to install the new drivers and software for the WL300. 1.3. Client Driver Requirements ------------------------------- For optimal performance and reliability, all clients connecting to the WL300 Software Access Point should be using the drivers version 1.34 or higher. (V.1.34 drivers for the WL100 and WL200 WLAN cards are available from the Compaq support website.) 1.4. Installation Preparation ----------------------------- If you plan to use the Compaq WL300 to connect a wireless LAN to a wired LAN, you must install a wired NIC (typically an Ethernet adapter) according to the instructions provided by the NIC’s manufacturer. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. First Time Installation ========================== If you have previously installed a Compaq WL100 or WL200 Wireless LAN adapter or a WL300 Software Access Point on your computer, please follow the instructions in section 3. below. If this is the first time you install a WL300 Software Access Point on your computer and you plan to use: - a Compaq WL100 PC Card, please follow the instructions in section 2.3 below; - a Compaq WL200 PCI Card, please continue with section 2.1 below. *************************************************************** Note: You may be required to use your original Microsoft Windows operating system CD-ROM during installation. CAUTION: Please refer to your computer manual for instructions on inserting or removing a PC card. It is not advisable to remove a PC Card from a PC Card slot while Windows and the PC are turned on; doing so may result in a lock up of your PC and file corruption. Tip: After completing the installation, you can learn more about sharing network resources such as printers, by reviewing your Microsoft Windows documentation or the Network Sharing section in the user’s guide on the original WL300 CD-ROM. *************************************************************** 2.1. WL200 PCI Card Hardware Installation ----------------------------------------- 1. Shut down Windows, turn off the computer, and unplug the computer from the power source. ************************************************************ CAUTION: Failure to turn off and unplug your computer before removing the cover can result in injury or damage to the computer. ************************************************************ 2. Remove the computer’s cover. 3. Locate the screw holding the PCI Card’s metal bracket in place at the rear of the computer. Remove the screw and save it. 4. While being careful not to touch the metal connectors at the bottom of the PCI card, insert the card firmly into the PCI slot, then properly secure it with the screw removed in step 3. 5. Place and secure the cover onto the computer, then reconnect the power supply. 6. Connect the external antenna to the PCI card. ************************************************************ CAUTION: To attach the antenna, turn the antenna nut counterclockwise. ************************************************************ 7. Continue with the section 2.2.?. below that describes the operating system you are using. 2.2. WL200 PCI Card Driver and Software Installation ---------------------------------------------------- 2.2.1. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1. Windows finds a Cirrus Logic PCIC Compatible Controller and loads drivers. If Windows finds a PCI PCMCIA Bridge, select SEARCH FOR BEST DRIVER FOR DEVICE and provide the location of the Windows 95 or Windows 98 installation files. 2. Click YES in the "System Settings Change" dialog box to restart your system. 3. Windows reports "Found PCMCIA Services" and loads drivers. Please provide the location of the original Windows Installation files if Windows requests them. 4. Click YES in the "System Settings Change" dialog box to restart your system. 5. Windows detects new hardware and asks for drivers. These are located in the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above. 6. Windows displays several dialog boxes to complete the driver installation and may ask for your original Windows installation disk. 7. After the driver installation, remove any diskettes from the diskette drive, and click YES in the "System Settings Change" dialog box to restart your system. 8. When Windows has restarted, select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583, select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 9. Follow the on-screen setup instructions, enter the license key as printed on the back of the original CD-ROM sleeve, and accept the Software License Agreement. ************************************************************ CAUTION: Each Software Access Point has its own unique license key. By default, the setup program uses the SSID "COMPAQ", but it is strongly recommended to change the SSID to one of your choice. ************************************************************ 11. Select the NIC you will bridge through to a wired LAN (or select NONE), accept (or change) the default installation and program folders for the software. 13. Setup copies files and installs the software, then asks you to reboot the system. 14. After the computer reboots, a Microsoft Network login box may display. If you are required to log on to a server, enter a password. Otherwise, click OK to continue. Windows NT 4.0 - - - - - - - - - - - 1. Start Windows and log on with Administrator privileges. 2. Select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above. 3. Select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 4. Follow the on-screen setup instructions, enter the license key as printed on the back of the original CD-ROM sleeve, and accept the Software License Agreement. ************************************************************ CAUTION: Each Software Access Point has its own unique license key. Select the Compaq 11 Mbps PCI Adapter and click OK. 8. If TCP/IP has already been installed on this computer, the Network Properties dialog box is displayed. Continue with step 11 below. If TCP/IP has not yet been installed on this computer, continue with step 9 below. 9. Windows asks for the folder \i386 on the original Microsoft Windows NT installation CD-ROM. Insert the Windows NT CD-ROM, browse to this folder, and click on NEXT. Windows adds the TCP/IP protocol. 10. If your network uses DHCP, click YES in the TCP/IP setup dialog box and continue with step 13 below. If your network uses static IP addresses, click on NO in the TCP/IP setup dialog box and continue with step 11 below. 11. In the Network Properties dialog box, select the Compaq Wireless LAN Card in the Adapter drop-down box. 12. If you have received IP information from your Administrator, enter it in the fields under Specify an IP Address; otherwise, select Obtain an IP Address from a DHCP server. Click OK. 13. Select YES, I WANT TO RESTART MY COMPUTER NOW and click FINISH. 14. After the computer reboots, a Microsoft Network login box may display. If you are required to log on to a server, enter a password. Otherwise, click OK to continue. Browse to the subfolder \setup and click on OK. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers. Click YES if Windows displays a "Digital Signature not found" dialog box. 3. After the driver installation, select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583, select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 4. If you have installed a PCMCIA card utility that automatically detects new hardware and asks for drivers, it is recommended that you cancel the automatic installation procedure and continue with step 4 below. 4. Select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above, select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 5. Firmware Upgrade --------------------- After installing the WL adapter, drivers and software, please follow the steps below to ensure your WL card operates with the latest firmware. Some of the advanced features implemented with Version 1.34 of the drivers and configuration utility are not supported by previous firmware version. 1. Close the Configuration Utility. 2. Select START->RUN and BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583. 3. Select the file FWUPDATE.exe, click on OPEN, then click on OK. 4. The utility detects the WL card and the current firmware version. 5. - If the current firmware is identified as 0.8.0, you need not update the adapter. Continue with step 6 below. - If the current firmware is identified as 0.6.2 or lower, click on UPDATE and follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware of your WL adapter. 6. Close the FWUPDATE utility by clicking on the x button in the upper right hand corner. Upgrade of Existing Installation =================================== 3.1. Uninstall Previous WLAN Installation ----------------------------------------- 1. Do NOT uninstall the previously installed hardware. Start Windows, select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583, select the file setup.exe, click on OPEN and click OK. 2. Setup alerts you that a previous WLAN installation was detected and must be uninstalled first. Click YES to uninstall the old drivers and software. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall. When prompted, reboot your computer. 4. Continue with the section 3.2.?. below that applies to your operating system. 3.2. Installing V. 1.34 Drivers and Software -------------------------------------------- 3.2.1. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1. Upon reboot, Windows finds new hardware and asks for drivers. These are located in the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above. 2. Follow the on-screen Windows directions to install the drivers. Windows displays several dialog boxes to complete the driver installation and may also ask for your original Microsoft Windows installation disk. Restart your computer when asked to do so. 3. After Windows has restarted, select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above, select the file setup.exe, click on OPEN, then click OK. 4. Follow the on-screen setup instructions, enter the license key as printed on the back of the original CD-ROM sleeve, and accept the Software License Agreement. 5. Accept the Software License Agreement by clicking YES. 6. Setup asks you to enter the Service Set Identifier (SSID) and to select the Channel for the SAP to use. 7. Select the NIC you will bridge through to a wired LAN (or select NONE), accept (or change) the default installation and program folders for the software, and let setup copy files and install the software. Restart your computer when asked to do so. 8. After the computer reboots, a Microsoft Network login box may display. If you are required to log on to a server, enter a password. Otherwise, click OK to continue. Do NOT click CANCEL at this login box because you will lose wireless network functionality. 9. Continue with section 4 for more information about this release. 3.2.2. Windows NT 4.0 - - - - - - - - - - - 1. Turn on the computer, start Windows NT 4.0, and log on with administrator privileges. 2. Select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583 in section 1.1 above, select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 3. Follow the on-screen setup instructions, enter the license key as printed on the back of the original CD-ROM sleeve, and accept the Software License Agreement. 4. Setup asks you to enter the Service Set Identifier (SSID) and to select the Channel for the SAP to use. 5. Select the NIC you will bridge through to a wired LAN (or select NONE), accept (or change) the default installation and program folders for the software. 6. Select the type of WL adapter you are installing (PCMCIA card or PCI card). 7. Follow the Windows on-screen instructions to configure your network settings, then let setup copy files and install the software. Restart your computer when asked to do so. 8. After the computer reboots, a Microsoft Network login box may display. If you are required to log on to a server, enter a password. Otherwise, click OK to continue. Do NOT click CANCEL at this login box because you will lose wireless network functionality. 9. Windows 2000 - - - - - - - - - - 1. Upon starting, Windows 2000 detects the new hardware and asks for the location of the drivers. Select SEARCH FOR A SUITABLE DRIVER FOR MY DEVICE 2. Select SPECIFY A LOCATION and browse to the folder to which you expanded the SP15583 in step 1.1 above. Select the subfolder \setup and click OPEN. Windows finds the driver file netndc2k.inf. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Windows driver installation. 4. Select START->RUN, then BROWSE to the folder to which you expanded SP15583, select the file setup.exe, click OPEN, then click OK. 5. Follow the on-screen setup instructions, enter the license key as printed on the back of the original CD-ROM sleeve, and accept the Software License Agreement. 6. Setup asks you to enter the Service Set Identifier (SSID) and to select the Channel for the SAP to use. 5. Select the NIC you will bridge through to a wired LAN (or select NONE), accept (or change) the default installation and program folders for the software. 6. After the computer reboots, a Microsoft Network login box may display. If you are required to log on to a server, enter a password. Otherwise, click OK to continue. Do NOT click CANCEL at this login box because you will lose wireless network functionality. 7. Known Issues ----------------- 4.3.1. Uninstallation under Windows NT 4.0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Upon uninstalling the WL300 from a PC running Windows NT, the network bindings are reconfigured, but the new bindings configuration is not activated until the PC is rebooted. To remedy the situation, please execute the following steps: 1. Uninstall the WL300 using the Uninstall utility provided in START->PROGRAMS->COMPAQ->11MBPS SOFTWARE ACCESS POINT-> UNINSTALLER. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the drivers and software. 3. When the uninstallation is completed, Select START->SHUTDOWN to restart the PC. Upon reboot, your network will again be configured properly. 4.3.2. NIC Removal using Network Icon in Windows NT 4.0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When attempting to remove the WL200 PCI card adapter from the PC using the PROPERTIES dialog box from NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD or clicking on the NETWORK icon in the CONTROL PANEL, Windows NT may not reboot properly. ***************************************************************** WARNING: Uninstalling the WL200 adapter (or WL300 with PCI adapter) through the NETWORK applet or the NETWORK PROPERTIES may prevent your PC from starting properly and is NOT ADVISED. ***************************************************************** Should you have accidentally removed the WL200 using the NETWORK applet or the NETWORK PROPERTIES dialog box in Windows NT 4.0 and are now experiencing difficulties rebooting your system, you may be able to recover your system as follows: 1. Shut down Windows, turn off your PC and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. 2. Physically uninstall the PCI adapter from your PC. 3. Close the PC's cover, reconnect the power supply and boot to Windows. 4. Select the NETWORK icon in CONTROL PANEL, select the ADAPTER tab and click on ADD. 5. Use the OEMSETUP.INF file (in the folder to which you expanded the softpaq) to manually add a WL200 adapter to your system. You will be asked to reboot your PC. 6. Upon reboot, you should be able to run the Uninstall utility that was supplied with the WL200 installation (START->PROGRAMS->COMPAQ WIRLESS LAN) or with the WL300 installation (START->PROGRAMS->COMPAQ->11 MBPS SOFTWARE ACCESS POINT). 4.4.
